RE: BOTCHED OKIGWE RE-RUN
TONY ODIRICHUKWU WROTE>>>>
I have read so many opinions on the indefinitely postponed Imo North (Okigwe zone) Senatorial Elections.
At first I was very reluctant to comment on the candidates especially the two front runners; Chief Athan Achonu (One Arm General) and Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu and the election itself.
I finally decided to comment on the election because it is an election that will produce a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria whose opinions and ideas could help mend Nigeria.
Much more than the possible effect of the successful candidate's beliefs on our nations future is the significance of the Imo North Senatorial election to the fortunes of the Igbo nation in the present political dispensation.
But first I must state that far from some postulations questioning the qualification of the candidates, I strongly believe that the candidates especially the two front runners are very qualified to represent Imo North at the Senate.
The question for our brothers in Okigwe Senatorial zone to answer as they vote in that election is:
Are you contented with voting for a senator to represent a section of your senatorial zone or will you proudly vote for a senator to represent the interest of the Igbo nation??
This is the difference in choosing between the two candidates.
This difference is bigger than any political party affiliation. The difference is the interest of the Igbo nation. Qualification wise I cannot fault any of the candidates as they are all eminently qualified.
But the choice is between narrow partisan party interest and the vast important interest of the Igbo nation.
The South East and South South regions urgently need the connection in the Senate with the ruling party: The All Progressive Congress.
The election is therefore not about Chief Athan or Rt Hon Uwajumogu since both of them are qualified but about connecting the Southeast region especially with the ruling party so as to get the full benefits streaming from the current government.
While a vote for Chief Achonu is only a partisan vote for him and the PDP, a vote for Rt Hon Uwajumogu is a Pan Igbo vote.
It is a vote for the resurgence and reconnection of the Igbo to the Nation's mainstream politics. It is my conviction therefore that an APC Okigwe zone Senator will be of immense benefit to the Igbo nation.
By voting Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu as their Senator, the people of Okigwe zone will be giving the Igbo nation a senator.
I encourage every eligible voter for the Imo North senatorial election to have the very important Pan Igbo menu of the election in mind and vote Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu when the rerun elections come up.
