OKIGWE SENATORIAL RE-RUN: UWAJUMOGU ADVOCATES FREE AND FAIR ELECTION.

As preparation for the postponed Okigwe senatorial re-run reaches an advanced stage, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, has stated that Okigwe people would not take anything less than a free, fair and credible exercise in the rescheduled poll.

Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu, was speaking at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Owerri, during a stakeholders meeting organised by the commission to intimate participating political parties in the re-run elections, on the plans by the commission, towards the peaceful conduct of the poll.

While expressing the readiness of his party, the APC for the poll, the former Imo Assembly Speaker also called on the electoral umpire to address all the issues that stalled the conclusion of the initial process and  immediately fix a workable date for the smooth conduct of the re-run, adding that people of Okigwe zone are ready and eager to exercise their civic duty in a free and fair manner.

He further lamented the obvious consequences the continued postponement of the poll would cause the people of the zone, stressing that it was imperative for the commission to come up with a transparent process that will ginger the conduct of a free and fair election in the zone, as well as fix a feasible date for the election, as people of the zone presently lack a credible representative at the Senate.

While absorbing his supporters who were mainly youths and women from Okigwe zone, that stormed the INEC headquarters in protest of perceived injustice being melted on him and their party,  of  criminal intentions, he said, that  the allegations of violence and involvement in criminal activities, against the protesters by those he described as enemies of democracy, are mere fabrications cooked up to demonize the good intentions of the protesters.

The APC candidate however expressed his confidence in the ability of the electoral commission to conduct a transparent exercise which will be acceptable by all contenders in line with the global best practices.

Reacting, a National Commissioner in the commission, Mr. Soyebi, expressed appreciation on the demand of the affected political parties for a free and fair contest.

While urging the respective participating political parties to maintain the peaceful atmosphere, the Commissioner promised that the state office of the commission would immediately liaise with its headquarters in Abuja towards coming out with a definite date for the conduct of the poll.
