Recognising the role of women in economic growth in Nigeria through entrepreneurship training, partners to the forthcoming 2016 International Women’s Day Conference, Rubies Vocational School and SME100 Nigeria have agreed to empower young and upcoming women in the country with entrepreneurial skills to make them better women of the future and economic productivity.
The Executive Director, Rubies Vocational School, Mrs. Orode Ryan-Okpu, said, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises could help to stimulate the development of the economy, boost the country’s international trade and create unprecedented employment, and RVS is committed to empowering women in various sectors of the economy.
The ED, at a media briefing in Lagos, said Nigeria needs more women in every sector like technology, agriculture, MSME, announced its forthcoming training conference for young and upcoming women entrepreneurs in Lagos. The training coming up next week, is designed to help the participants to succeed in their chosen careers, according to her. Ryan-Okpu said, “Rubies Vocational School started from zeal to create an environment where women can learn how to be entrepreneurs because we do train them in different skills and also help them start their businesses so that they can be successful entrepreneurs at the end of their training programme.
According to her, the training will run throughout 2016 and the conference will parade women who have succeeded greatly in their careers, as there were no criteria for interested conference participants In addition, the Executive Director, SME100 Nigeria, Charles Odii, a partnership organisation with RVS, said the organisation is geared towards supporting and stimulating entrepreneurship in Nigeria among women and young people in training them to access finance, market, capacity development, mentorship and network.
Odii said, these trainings have become important since proven statistics had shown that 20% of small businesses die every year in Nigeria due to different factors surrounding operational environment. So, we saw these gaps and took it upon ourselves to train them on marketing communication, packaging, local designs and others to make women successful entrepreneurs. On the partnership with Rubies and SME100, Brand Ambassador to the International Women’s Day, Mrs Omoni Oboli, said Nigerian women need skill empowerment to be able to generate income and help their families because one source of income might not be enough to carry the family. Again, if the man is not there or the woman is left alone with the children that would amount to suffering if the woman is not without skills.
According to Oboli, when you empower a woman, you have empowered a nation.
