A non-governmental organisation, Peace Corps of Nigeria, has said that if given legal backing through an Act of the Nationaxl Assembly, the organisation will provide job opportunities to about 800,000 youths in the country.
The organisation, which is at verge of getting official recognition through a pending Bill at the National Assembly, said it will substantially address social problems confronting Nigerian youths through their pre-occupation in meaningful and productive ventures.
A statement issued by the Corps’ acting national public relations officer, Patriot Grace Adamu, yesterday in Abuja, said that the Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC) Bill has been re-introduced in the House of Representatives and it has scaled the First Reading stage.
“The Bill, sponsored by Rt. Hon. Umar Abdullahi Faruk from Kebbi State, is seeking for an Act to establish NPC. The Bill, when passed, is to empower, develop and provide alternative employment for the youths to facilitate peace, community services, nation-building and for other related matters,” she said.
The statement also quoted the National Commandant of the Corps, Dr. Dickson Akoh, as expressing high hope and optimism that the Bill will be passed by both chambers of the National Assembly.
“According to him (Akoh), the Nigerian Peace Corps Act when promulgated, will besides providing employment for over 800,000 Nigerian Youths, will substantially address social problems confronting Nigerian youths through their pre-occupation in meaningful and productive ventures where they will be economically relevant to themselves and there society at large,” it added.
Recall that the NPC Bill had earlier scaled through Second Reading in both the Senate and House of Reps in the 7th Assembly but was not passed before the end of the tenure of the Assembly, a development that made the Bill start afresh in the 8th Assembly.
